Gardening

We have entered into the world of gardening this year. A community garden started up this spring just down the street from us and we were able to join up with a friend from church and share a plot. Jamie posted some more information on our adventure here if you'd like to read more about the beginning of it.

We purchased some starter plants and a few seeds, since it was pretty late in the season to start planting. Surprisingly, we've had almost 100 degree temps the last few weeks, which have been killer on the plants. We've tried to step up watering regularly, but at this point I don't even know if that would help. We've lost about half of the beans we planted (they were seeds) and the red and green peppers aren't looking too good. We planted chives too, but those haven't even made it out of the ground, so I'm not sure they are going to make it. Thankfully since we bought the tomato plants already growing, there are several small tomatoes there and it is so fun to see them growing! I can't wait until they are ready to eat! The other ones that are looking hopeful are the zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers, tomatillo, a few beans and cantaloupe. I'm not giving up on the peppers, we were really excited about those to begin with. Whatever happens though, it has been a fun adventure and I'm glad we have given it a shot. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and cool down, even just a little. We just want to eat a few vegetables from our garden that we have grown ourselves. I'll try to report back as we get closer to picking some of them. I did go out this weekend to take a few pictures though.

Here is a portion of the garden from the side:

Look, some small tomatoes!

This is the tomatillo plant, I'm hoping these will result in some fruit.

This cucumber needs to grow taller, we are working on some sort of pole for it to grow on.

The zucchini plant has a few flowers on it and they are looking good!

SO fun! Don't you just love growing food and then eating it? (Well, I guess you're not at the eating part yet, but trust me, it's cool. :) )
